The Thatched Cottage Gets a New Roof
We have received numerous requests from visitors to the website for photographs of the thatching work carried out on The Thatched Cottage during the summer of 2004.
The pictures over the next few pages illustrates the appeal of this traditional skill.
Thanks to the craftsmen from:

The pile of reed thatch bundles at the top was only a small percentage of the total quantity required for the thatch roof! It is amazing just how much reed was used. Only the actual ends of the reed can be seen, the reed itself lies under many overlapping layers.

We were initially only going to thatch the roof on the new section of the cottage but you can see in the photograph on the right that the rear section of the original roof was quite worn so eventually that was removed and the whole of the rear received a new roof!
